This essay by Gerard Jones is centered around the benefits of violent media and how it helps children grow up in society. This is expressed with his thesis, "The dual- identity concept at the heart of many superhero storied helps kids negotiate the conflicts between the inner self and the public self as they work through the early stages of socialization. Jones also supports this with evidence such as, “Fear, greed, power-hunger, rage: these are aspects of our selves that we try not to experience in our lives but often want, even need, to experience vicariously through stories of others". This evidence is helpful because it is a quote from Melanie Moore who is a Ph.D who works with teenagers. Jones is using the rhetorical device of ethos here which shows credibility for this information. Another piece of evidence from Jones' essay is, “Children need violent entertainment in order to explore the inescapable feelings that they’ve been taught to deny, and to reintegrate those feelings into a more whole, more complex, more resilient self hood.” This is another indecent of ethos by the same psychologist applying more evidence to support his thesis. Along with the evidence given Jones also gives a refutation to blow back any opposing statements. This is, i’m not going to argue that violent entertainment is harmless. I think it has helped inspire some people to real-life violence."I am going to argue that it’s helped hundreds of people for every one it’s hurt, and that it can help far more if we learn to use it well." This statement is helpful because he declares that violent media could effect someone negatively, however it helps way more often than not, especially when society can learn to use it in an even better way. I think Jones did a great job with this essay and exploited many amazing points in his writing. I believe that the media did cover this Florida shooting fairly. They took into consideration the way this young man purchased the firearm and that he was mentally sick. They also threw in some information that stated he had multiple calls of domestic disturbances at his house. The images used by the media can effect the public opinion because they will show images of no remorse in order to show the public that these criminals are not sorry for what they had done.
